On the shore of the East River, in the heart of Midtown, Turtle Bay is one of Manhattan’s historic residential neighbourhoods. Halfway between the United Nations headquarters and the bustling business district surrounding Grand Central Terminal and within a stone’s throw of Central Park South, it enjoys an excellent location, close to iconic landmarks of the city such as Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center, the Chrysler building or the MoMA.
It is in this dynamic area, drawing everyday a multitude of sybarite travellers, diplomats and executives looking for sophisticated accommodation, where the luxury hotel AKA United Nations stands. The condominium, a 21-story tower completely renovated, comprises 95 bedrooms ranging from 52 to 62 m2 for stays of one month or longer designed by the New York-based studio Asfour-Guzy Architects and inspired in the lively and cosmopolitan spirit of the neighbourhood.
In the lobby level, adjacent to a very comfortable, modern lounge, the gym and the communal work table, there is a lovely outdoor terrace evoking the karensasui or Japanese Zen gardens. An ivy-covered wall demarcates this space strongly defined by its pure lines. Among the carefully laid vegetation, it is possible to find several Lapala, a collection of hand-woven armchairs by Lievore Altherr Molina, this time with black finishes.
Their simple, extremely contemporary design keeps in step with the sleek, clean and cutting-edge personality of the whole interior design and its authors: Asfour-Guzy studio. All their projects, and they have done quite a lot since 1988, either residential or commercial, can be easily recognized by their exquisite details, the use of natural materials and a very refined yet warm aesthetic.
