About ten years ago, Miguel Milá and Gonzalo Milá, his son and close collaborator, drove all the way down from Barcelona to pay a visit to our factory in Moixent. He was already in his eighties, but still passionate about design, especially about craftsmanship and natural materials such as rattan. He had something in mind and was convinced our team would be able to help him accomplish his plan.
Miguel’s story with rattan goes back to his youth, to the days spent in Gata de Gorgos where he learnt how to work the wicker from the local craftsmen themselves. He was in love ever since. Expormim’s philosophy based on the love of craftsmanship, the use of sustainable materials and a groundbreaking approach to rattan attracted Miguel Milá in his search for a fresh start with this exceptional natural material.

Miguel Milá would say Gata was one of his most difficult designs because there are so many chairs and so good. He took his time to think of something original, something worth the effort and came up with Gata chair. It may seem just a rattan chair, but there is so much more about it. First of all, it’s Miguel’s personal tribute to the craftsmen who taught him the technique and the passion he would nourish for the rest of his life. Thus the name Gata. Secondly, it would allow him to experiment with Expormim’s particular way of working with rattan. The result was Gata chair: a most cherished chair, a chair that will keep us company no matter how many years go by.
Gres stool: the rescue of an oldie
While developing Gata, Miguel and Gonzalo pulled an ace out of their sleeve. On one of their trips to the factory, they brought a stool designed by Miguel in the sixties. The original design was already very simple, but still sported the traditional wicker tyings we had successfully managed to supress since the inception of Oscar Tusquets Blanca’s Fontal rattan chair. It was fun to give the old classic a contemporary twist in both form and function: the new Gres is cleaner, more comfortable and resistant and comes also in a taller version suitable for high tables, bars and counters. Gres rattan stool is yet another proof of the validiy of each and every one of Miguel Milá’s designs.
For all this and more, Miguel Milá will always be one of our most admired and beloved masters. Sadly, he passed this summer at the age of 93. He left behind seven fruitful decades of excellent design. A huge legacy we will sure treasure forever.
