On September 19th, in coincidence with the first day of Feria Hábitat Valencia, we organised a very special event at the Colegio Territorial de Arquitectos de Valencia (CTAV): a round table focused on our iconic Lapala chair on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. Manel Molina, one of Lapala‘s designers and one of Expormim’s closer collaborators, designer, University teacher and consultant Javier Pastor and journalist and curator Tachy Mora led this colloquium about craftsmanship, design, culture and tradition. The event took place in the inner courtyard of the building, an elegantly refurbished space, and it was followed by a catering with live music.
It was the perfect excuse not just to pay tribute to one of our most beloved pieces, but also to celebrate 25 years of Mediterranean lifestyle. During the event, we revealed the video expressly produced to commemorate Lapala‘s anniversary where the newest version of the chair appears in all its glory. Because as a birthday gift, Expormim has launched Lapala in its original material, the one inspiring the chair in the first place: rattan pith, the internal fibre from which wicker is obtained. Thus it was born in 1998 and thus it is revisited now.
This is not its first makeover and it might not be the last. When Lapala was rescued by Expormim around 2015, aware that it had the makings of a true classic, we wanted to test its potential as an outdoor chair. So we turned to high-resistant nautical rope and stainless steel. The reedition worked so fine, the family soon grew and became one of our most praised collections. Its essence though remained intact: beautiful in its simplicity, heartwarming, sensual, the stunning hybrid child of modern design and Mediterranean tradition. And ever since Lapala chair has passed every test, even the test of time, with flying colours.
When Lievore Altherr Molina, the Barcelona-based studio behind Lapala, addressed this project in 1998, they did it from a groundbreaking position: back then, nobody was really interested in connecting industrial design to craftsmanship and despite the exquisite chair they managed to create, Lapala went unnoticed and almost sank into oblivion. What it was barely more than a lucky finding in the beginning, today is one of our most precious objects. In Manel Molina’s own words: “I don’t know if Lapala is an icon, but over time I’d like it to become a classic”. And that is our wish too. Many happy returns of the day!
